The TikTok Hair Trends To Copy This Summer

We're not ashamed to admit it: We've spent a lot of time on TikTok during the last few months. Blame it on a combination of quarantine and social fomo, but we can report that despite some very numb thumbs, our dance moves, video editing skills, and hair are all the better for it.

In fact, you might have noticed that the majority of this year’s hair trends have all come from the platform, unsupring Instagram as the destination for hair inspiration. Much is this due to the resurgence of at-home beauty hacks which have been circulating on the app, which then quickly turned into viral challenges for beauty lovers.

Since TikTok has secured its place for what is up-and-coming in the hair world, we’ve rounded up the best TikTok hair trends to try this summer. From an age-old technique to create heatless curls, DIY curtain bangs (tread lightly with that one), and 90s highlights that are making a comeback, here are the viral trends to copy now.

Curtain Bangs:

We all love a good hair transformation, especially as we come into summer - ‘tis the season for sun, sea and socialising after all, which means the photo opportunities are aplenty and your hair better look good. It’s come to our attention however, that it seems everyone is getting the exact same summer chop haircut - more specifically, the exact same fringe and the look is going viral.

The TikTok haircut trend of summer 2020 is the classic curtain fringe - which, for the uninitiated, is a 60s-turned-90s inspired fringe that hits around the cheekbones and 'curtains' open in the middle to frame the face. Just google Brigitte Bardot, Alexa Chung or basically any member of N’sync as a reference and you’ll see what we mean.

The look, as retro as it is, is endlessly versatile, playing well with just about any length or hair texture and is also one of the easiest ways to wear a fringe. Given that the before and afters, look so good, it’s no wonder the #curtainbangs has amassed over 5 million views already.

Choose to go full DIY and cut your fringe yourself, all it’ll take is a steady hand, some hairdressing scissors and a bit courage, however just as a PSA, let us recommend the video below as essential viewing before you go and cancel your hairdressers appointment.

In fact, for the fringe-adverse, you can cheat the look of bangs yourself at home, which is the perfect fix for if you’re looking to switch up your look, but aren’t quite ready to take the permanent plunge.

Here’s our quick faux-bang tutorial:

  1. Start by styling your hair into a half-up, half-down hairstyle, starting from ear-to-ear and securing the top section with an elastic.
  2. To start creating your fake bangs, bring the ends of the half-up ponytail forward towards your forehead and secure into place with bobby pins.
  3. When you have the desired length you want – whether that’s short micro bangs or a full 90s-style curtain fringe – comb them into place.
  4. Finish by adding a headband. A crochet style like this one, will not only cleverly conceal the tell-tale signs of your fake bangs, but it will also add a stylish and summery finish to your look

How To Style Your Curtain Bangs

When it comes to styling, curtain bangs are the most versatile of the fringe family and make the perfect addition to a style that is swept-up and off your face like a messy bun.Create a messy topknot by scooping your hair up, and as you twist your hair tie around to make a ponytail, twist your hair with it. For a fun and stylish finish, complete your messy bun with one of the greatest fashion reruns from the 90s - the scrunchie. A colourful, printed scrunchie will look super cute and requires minimal effort.

Sock Curls

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would have noticed the “sock curls” hair trend doing the rounds on TikTok. Sock curls, which is essentially curling your hair using nothing but some socks, is one of the rare TikTok trends that has proved its staying power, which is essentially down to the fact that it really do work. In fact, sock curls are an age-old technique that has been around for centuries, being popular in both the 50s and 60s as a way to curl hair without foam rollers. Fast forward to 2020, and the look, vouched by millions of viral tutorials is still going strong, proving how fun and practical DIY hair hacks can be.

Celebrity hairstylist Justine Marjan demonstrates below how you can get soft, beachy waves with minimal effort and zero heat overnight. Press play below, and let us break it down for you.

As baffling as it may seem at first, sock curls are incredibly easy to create. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of Justine’s sock curls routine.

  1. Justine starts by clipping long socks to damp hair before separating into sections and twisting around the sock.
  2.  She then secures with a scrunchie and removes the clips.
  3. For the next step, she sleeps with the 'sock plaits' overnight and upon waking up in the morning, unravels her hair to reveal beautiful natural waves

It really is that easy! You can also choose to use stocking or bathrobe ties instead of socks and top tip, a wave mist or hairspray will help to secure the curls for a lasting finish.

When you’ve woken up with your voluminous waves the next day, we recommend styling with 2 oversized barrettes for an E-gir take on 90s styling.

Chunky Highlights

From Dua Lipa to Blackpink and J Lo, there’s hardly a celeb who hasn’t fallen for this year’s chunky, face-framing  “money piece” highlights. This viral TikTok look first started circulating back in April and the look is still one of the most popular hair trends of 2020 - IRL and all.

Cheap and easy to DIY, just follow your favourite TikTokers and order a bleach kit off Amazon, these highlights also require little, to no skill since you’re just having to touch the front pieces around your face, and not worry about ruining your whole head of hair in the process.

Top Tip: have a bottle of purple shampoo at your side in order to banish any orange-y undertones and just note, this may take 1 -2 rounds of bleach for the desired effect.

How To Style:

Moneypiece highlights look great styled with two snap-claps, or if you fancy an updo, try a high half-up ponytail with your two face-framing pieces left free for all of the focus. Go full 90s and finish your look off with a jumbo or extra-large scrunchie

Braided Styles

TikTok has done a lot for the democratisation of hair skills and braiding is a standout example. Different braided styles seem to always be trending on the platform and we love that they prove that a braided look doesn’t have to be super complicated - giving us hope that our hair can look incredible without taking hours to do up.

We’ve noticed braided space buns make a comeback just in time for summer. This look is perfect for second-day hair. Grab some clear elastics and  watch a step-by-step tutorial here.

If you’re looking for a quick and easy bun hack, we love this DIY tutorial that teaches you how to create a lace braided bun in 0 seconds. Perfect for summer, this look will ensure you can keep cool and still look cute in the heat, just think of it as the perfect polished alternative to the messy bun you wear on repeat.

To recreate this look, all you’ll need is a Scunci Bun Maker, some bobby pins, an elastic and style with some cute snap-clips and you’ll all set. Watch below.
