Our 5 favourite hair hacks that got us through 2021

Working from home or out in the world on the daily, these hair hacks manage to keep your hair looking great without putting in super effort.

There’s no question keeping your hair looking glamourous every day can take some work. But with the right hacks in your arsenal, you too can tame those tresses and have them looking spectacular in no time flat.

Here are five of our favourites—we’ve been using them all year, and they’ve kept us looking our best selves!

DIY in the hair department has never been trendier. With more of us working from home than ever, these hacks give you simple yet effective ways to make sure your hair looks great online or in person.

So, without further ado, let’s jump to it!

This bun hack is a simple yet tried-and-true look that’s perfect when you’re working from home and want to look together if your boss calls a virtual meeting. It’s simple to do and keeps your hair looking classically stylish in every sitch.

Smooth your hair back from your face and gather it into a ponytail at the back of your head.

Twist the hair around the ponytail base to form a bun and secure it with hairpins. Spritz with hairspray to hold everything in place.

Next level: Add a scrunchie or scarf to dress up the bun and hairpins or snap clips to keep fly-aways in check.

Another popular 2021 hair hack is to put your hair back into two bubble braids.

The process might sound a bit tricky but once you’ve done this a couple of times, it’s easy! Plus, working from home makes for great practice time for braiding (meetings or classes on the webcam means no one will see the back anyway.)

You’ll need anywhere between 10-20 hair elastics, depending on the length of your hair. Start with a straight part down the middle, dividing your hair into two even sections. Split one section into a further two equal pieces and tie one behind the other with a hair elastic. Split the front piece into two equal sections and bring the back piece through the two front pieces. Use an elastic to tie the two pieces together, they now form the new back piece. Continue the same splitting of the front piece into two equal sections, bringing the back piece through the two front pieces, and tying the two pieces together with an elastic. Once you’re at the end of your hair, tie with a final elastic then gently pull at the braided sections to loosen and make it look bigger. Finish off with some groovy clips at each end.

One hair accessory that’s so in right now is the claw clip.

They’re perfect for any hair type and add grip to your hair, which can be especially handy when you’re working or studying from home. There’s as many types of claw clips as there are hairdos, but most are plastic or metal.

Since they’re so simple to use, claw clips are perfect for holding a simple hair twist, placing at the top of a ponytail, on a side braid, or you could even use one with a bun. They’re also an easy accessory on a lazy day to keep hair out of your eyes while you work on that side project you’ve got going.

Claw clips have been around since the early 1900s and have gone in and out of fashion, but we think they’re here to stay!

2021 has been the year for growing out fringes! With lockdown hitting every other day and limited access to hairdressers and stylists, there’s no time like the present to make a dramatic change.

We’ve got a few accessories to hide the fringe-growing blah days and help make the whole process a little easier. Here are a few of our favourites:

Keep your long fringe from curling up your nose while showing the world who you really are—it’s a win-win. Hairbands come in a variety of styles and sizes, so it’s easy to find the one that screams your unique style.

Secure your hair back when your fringe gets too unruly. You can go low-key and match them to your hair colour or make a bold statement and choose oversized, brightly coloured and in-your-face (but not in your eyes).

So pretty or super sophisticated—barrettes are a fun, retro look to try when taming a fringe. Add multiples for a cool vibe.

Space buns are another super easy hack and a great option if you feel like something more playful and “out there”.  Star Wars’ Princess Leia personified space buns four decades ago and celebs like Ariana Grande have brought them back to the present day - so we can say they’re a timeless style!

Start by parting your down the middle. Next, use hairbands to create two pigtails, either high or low on your head – but keep them even! You can tease your hair a little for more volume before twisting around and creating two buns, securing each with elastics and/or hairpins. Step it up with scrunchies and cute clips.

So there you have it!
