All winter we pine for summer weather. We imagine beach days, weekend adventures and OOO emails. But what we often fail to consider in our idyllic daydream is, you guessed it - humidity. While the rest of our bodies may wither in the heat, our hair takes on new life with unwanted frizz. Long curls? Tedious to style. A thick bob? Near-impossible to keep sleek. No matter what type or length or style of hair you have, when the sun shines past 25 degrees, it’s liable to cause problems.
The good news is, however, is that you’re not on your own. The internet is aplenty with hair hacks, some of which should firmly be left on TikTok, to others, which well really do work. To help you make best of a sticky situation, below we break down the best hairstyle hacks that will help you get through the hair vs. humidity battle.
LOOK 1: The Done-Undone Half-Up Hairstyle
We couldn’t not put a beach wave hairstyle on this list. ‘Tis the season after all. However, as much as we love the look of I-just-got-out-of-the-sea beach waves, this style isn’t so kind to baby hairs which can frizz up and make your hair look messy and not in the beach-to-bar cute kind of way. To combat this we suggest upping your maintenance levels slightly and styling your natural beach waves with a top knot or ponytail, both of which, in our experience, never fail when it comes to battling frizz. This look is super versatile and can be worn in a half up/half down bun or ponytail or pulled completely off the face for more humidity-fighting power.
Step 1: Scoop up the top half section of your hair and tie it into a high ponytail
Step 2: Take the ponytail and wrap it around the base of your headband and pin into place creating a top knot.
Step 4: Twist the second ponytail into a topknot and secure with a bobby pin
Step 5: Now here is where we get to the ‘done’ part. For the bottom section of your hair, accentuate your natural beach wave by going in with a curler. The VS Sassoon Unbound Cordless Curler means that you touch up on the go! Just make sure to use it on the lowest heat setting for natural-looking curls.
Step 6: Accessorize! This style looks great paired with a jumbo scrunchie, which will not only help hide any frizz or static but will instantly add some colour and style to the rest of your look.
LOOK 2:The Slicked-back Pony
A slicked-back ponytail will help tame any degree of frizz and is also versatile and chic enough to be your gym-to-office hero. Hair oil and bobby pins will both be your two new BFFs when creating a snatched, frizz-free pony, and will also help to give off those Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid vibes. And best of all this look is super easy to do at home, requires 0 skill level and can be dressed up or down. You can also do this hairstyle on clean, wet or on dirty hair, just follow the steps below.
Step 1: Using a comb create a clean centre part.
Step 2: Brush the hair smooth.
Step 3: Work some hair oil or pomade through hands and run it through your hair.
Step 4: Gather hair into a low ponytail at the back of the head.
Step 5: Secure with an elastic, running any extra product through the ends.
Step 6: Spray with hairspray for extra all-day hold!
LOOK 3:The Scandi Braided Ponytail
Surely a braid is just a braid you ask? Wrong. You can choose to go for a side braid, a fishtail braid, a braided half-updo...but the only braid we want to rock this summer - is the Scandi braid. The Scandi braid, for the uninitiated, is essentially a ponytail that is then plaited into a simple three-plait braid, but really what gives this braid all its Scandi-ness, is the fact that it’s slicked-back and as chic as the subregion it’s named after.
Giving off all the best kind of Sweedish influencer vibes, this fun style will also keep your hair off of your neck and face leaving you both cool and frizz-free throughout the day.
Step 1: First off, to avoid a sad, skinny tail, mist a texturizing spray over the length of dry hair which will add grit and keep things full.
Step 2. Smooth a sculpting paste through your roots as you scrape your hair back (this is an essential step to the braid’s Scandi-ness).
Step 3. Create a tight, high ponytail and secure with an elastic.
Step 4: Run some hair oil through the ponytail which will keep the braid clean and sharp by preventing any layers from poking through.
Step 5: Style your ponytail into a three-plait braid and secure with a polyband at the bottom.
Step 6: Style with a super cute scrunchie! These pink velvet styles are very CPH fashion week.
LOOK 4: 90s Dutch Braids
Dutch braids, which can also be known as boxer braids are the cream of the crop when it comes to protecting your hair from unwanted frizz. Whether you wear one, two, or several braids, the style is sure to keep your hair under control and looking good for the entire day and is perfect for thick, textured and naturally curly hair.
Aside from the cool 90s connotations which helped this look receive a +329% in searches on Pinterest, this protective style is also super low-maintenance in upkeep, which is essential for temps that refuse to drop.
Step 1: Start by prepping the hair with a gel or pomade to help the braids maintain their hold.
Step 2: Take three small pieces of hair at your hairline and weave each piece under rather than over (the opposite of a French braid).
Step 3: Repeat the pattern, whilst adding more hair (about a half- to three-quarter-inch) from the root each time you weave a new section.
Step four: Once you reach the nape of your neck, switch to a regular three-strand braid.
Step five: Tie it off at the end with a clear hair tie, like these Polyband Elastics. Repeat the process on the other side.
