How to Enter the New Season (and Step Out of Your Hair Rut)

Does your hair routine feel like a rinse and repeat of the same ol’ boring style? We’ve all been there when your so-called signature ‘do is more of a rut than a look. If you’re tired of doing the same thing week after week, we hear you, and we’ve got your back with heaps of super cute hair ideas to help you shake things up and rock a new look for the new season.

1. Brave the chop

You don’t have to cut your hair to change up your style but lopping off some length is one way of achieving a gorgeous new look in an instant. Short hair can be edgy, easy to style and give you a refreshing new start, so why not consider one of these versatile cuts to start the new season with a bang?

  • Pixie cut - The pixie is an iconic style that is as effortless as it is cool. We’ve seen celebs including Zoe Kravitz, Miley Cyrus, and Rihanna pull off this cute cut that is daringly short but universally flattering. You can go sleek and simple with a straight, slightly longer pixie or bold with baby bangs and short layers to release your inner rock chick.

  • Classic bob - A bob is always chic and can be styled straight, wavy or with beautiful curls. You can wear it with bangs, change up your parting or ask your stylist to give you an angular or asymmetrical chop for added drama.

  • The lob - A lob is a long bob, typically cut to graze the shoulders. This style is a great middle-ground if you’re not ready to lose several inches and is super easy to style. Everyone from Chrissy Teigen to Taylor Swift has given us major hair envy with this elegant chop that suits every face shape and hair type.

If you’re wondering how to style short hair, it’s easy! Short ‘dos work straight, wavy, curly, with bangs, straight out of bed… the possibilities are endless! Try adding texture by scrunching through some sea salt spray, pin back the sides with bobby pins, wear it straight and sleek, or use a curler to create stunning cascading curls.

2. Colour inspo

A scroll through Insta will provide a tonne of inspiration for a fresh new colour this autumn. Think outside of the classic blonde, brunette, black and red and look for a shade that will shift your style. Colouring our hair feels adventurous, and it’s a great way to express individual style. There are endless choices too. Look beyond block colour, and there’s balayage, highlights, dipped ends, multicolour, ombre, and toners, to name a few. So, why not try a stint with a cool new hue for a fun way to shake up your style this season?

3. Practice your pony

If you’re a fan of the classic scrape and go, then why not revamp your signature style with a more sophisticated pony? Say goodbye to your boring go-to and try one of these pretty ponytails instead:

  • High ponytail - A tight, high pony is stylish and fierce. To create it yourself at home, brush your hair up on to the crown of your head using a bristle brush, then secure it with an elastic band. Go over the tail with a straightener, then finish with a little hairspray to smooth down any flyaways. Complete the look with a gorgeous scrunchie or wrap a strand of hair around to conceal the band.

  • Half-up pony - This half-up, half-down style is one of the most versatile ponytails as it can work on any hair length. Section off the top part of your hair around the crown and choose how high or low you want your tail to sit. Use a bristle brush to smooth the hair before securing it with an elastic band. The rest of your hair will flow freely, and you can choose to wear it straight or wavy. Finish with a spritz of hairspray on top for a smooth look.

  • Low and loose - A low ponytail is an understated style that looks chic and works a dream on naturally straight or fine hair. Choose your parting, then scoop the hair up and smooth it with a bristle brush before securing it at the nape of your neck with a band. This style works best on oval and heart-shaped faces.

4. Pretty plaits

We’re obsessed with braids! From French to fishtail and everything in between, braids are a staple of any hair routine. Plaiting or braiding your hair is a great way to experiment with your style, cover up roots and hide dead ends. You can wear them long, interwoven with ribbon, pinned up, in bunches, to the side or in a pony. Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok will be your best friends when it comes to endless inspo for this classic style.

5. Be bold with bobby pins

Sometimes all you need for a hair refresh are some snazzy accessories to add to your style. You can create a seriously cute look by having a little fun with bobby pin slides and snap clips, and they can be used for more than just holding hair in place. Try using bobby pins to create a faux fringe, make eye-catching designs, build dimensions in your hair or make a statement along your hairline.

6. Keep it cool with curls

If you’re seeking a mermaid-worthy mane, look no further. We’re here to cover all bases and help you achieve those big, bouncy curls or beachy waves of your dreams. It can be pretty tricky to curl your own hair, but with these simple steps, you’ll be rocking a new ‘do in no time:

  • Step 1: Invest in a decent straightener or curler with the right barrel size for your length.
  • Step 2: Curl your hair on the second or third day after shampooing to help your curls hold. Spray your hair with a heat protectant and a light spritz of hairspray before you get started.
  • Step 3: Curl your hair as desired, then resist the temptation to touch it. Touching the freshly curled hair will cause it to fall out quickly. So hands off! If you want big glamour curls, wrap the entire strand of hair around the barrel. If you want natural-looking waves, start lower down and avoid wrapping the ends. Keep the heat on your hair for max. 10 seconds then mist each curl with a little more hairspray to help it set.

Once you’ve got the curls you want, why stop there? Play with your new style by adding a headwrap or band, create a voluminous ponytail or try a half-up bun for an oh-so-pretty new look.
